Michael S. Vigil, former Chief/Internat'l Operations DEA, and author

Air Dates: October 1-3, 2022

This week’s guest on REPORT FROM SANTA FE is Michael S. Vigil, former Chief of International Operations for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) offices worldwide. In this episode, Vigil discusses his work as an undercover agent for the DEA, as well as his groundbreaking work in developing international drug enforcement agencies -- in 36 countries.

Vigil is one of the most highly decorated agents within the agency and was responsible for numerous multi-national operations. He was also responsible for developing global drug enforcement intelligence sharing platforms.

During his more than 30-year DEA career, Vigil was stationed in Mexico and Colombia. He often worked solo in cartel strongholds, putting his life at risk by dealing directly with the world’s largest drug kingpins.

Michael S. Vigil has received many awards in his 31-years as a DEA agent. He was honored to receive the most prestigious award in law enforcement, the “Top Cop Award” given by the National Police Association and which is awarded to only ten law enforcement officers yearly, nationwide.

Vigil was made an honorary General by the government of Afghanistan and given the key to the city of Shanghai by China. He was also given an Admiral’s sword by the former president of the Dominican Republic. One of his favorite accolades is a narcocorrido tribute from famous Mexican musician Alberto Angel, the ballad elevating Mike’s fame to rival those of the international drug lords he pursued.

On all matters pertaining to the DEA and international drug cartels, Vigil is one of the most authoritative sources for international journalists. He now writes his own narco thrillers, such as "Claw of the Dragon," "Land of Enchantment Cartel," and "Narco Queen." His informative and compelling memoir is called "DEAL."
