This Week: ANNE HILLERMANAward-Winning Reporter & N.Y. Times Best-Selling AuthorDiscussing Her New Novel - "The Tale Teller"

April 18, 2019 -- This week's guest on REPORT FROM SANTA FE is Anne Hillerman, award-winning reporter and New York Times best-selling author. Anne recently was awarded the 2019 Frank Waters Award for Literary Excellence by the Friends of the Pikes Peak Library District.

Hillerman's novels include Spider Woman's Daughter, Rock with Wings, Song of the Lion, and Cave of Bones. Her newest novel, The Tale Teller, is the fifth Bernadette Manuelito mystery, written in the spirit of continuing the legacy of her father Tony Hillerman's best-selling Joe Leaphorn/Jim Chee novels, set in Navajo Country. Anne is honored and delighted to continue the mystery series Tony created beginning in 1970. In her mysteries, Anne has expanded the role of female Navajo policewoman Bernadette Manuelito from her father's books, into a major character who excels in sleuthing and crime solving and provides insights into Navajo life, history, culture, religion, and art.

“When Anne Hillerman took over the series that made her father, Tony, famous, she gave voice to the female characters in the series, bringing them into the mainstream narrative without taking anything away from the male characters upon whom the series was built. Hillerman wisely left the best parts of her father’s beloved characters’ storylines intact while creating compelling new additions...As is always the case with Hillerman novels (either Tony or Anne), the supernatural is never far from the reader’s mind. Witchcraft and Native American lore permeate the narrative in a way that has appealed to readers for nigh on 50 years, with no end in sight.” (From Whodunit by Bruce Tierney)

Anne also is the author of the award-winning Tony Hillerman’s Landscape: On the Road with Chee and Leaphorn, created with husband/photographer Don Strel, and honored as the best photo book of the year by the Mountains and Plains Booksellers.

Praise for Anne Hillerman:“A worthy continuation of Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee series. Anne ably returns to Navajo Country in a colorful mystery that is both fascinating and vividly compelling.”- David Morrell, New York Times bestselling author of Murder as a Fine Art and First Blood (Rambo).

"A must-read for anyone who loved the great Tony Hillerman novels."- Douglas Preston, #1 New York Times best-selling author
