Stephenson is a writer of "speculative fiction" whose novels have been categorized as science fiction/historical fiction, cyberpunk, postcyberpunk, and baroque.

His works have received Hugo, Locus, and Prometheus Awards. He also writes non-fiction articles about technology in publications such as Wired.

Stephenson's breakthrough came in 1992 with “Snow Crash,” hailed by some critics as the “manic apotheosis of cyberpunk science fiction. It was the first of Stephenson's epic science fiction novels, among them “Reamde,” “Cryptonomicon,”. and “Seveneves.”
