With Election Day rapidly approaching, REPORT FROM SANTA FE takes a light-hearted, satirical, musical look at politics. This week's guest is Elaina Newport, founder of “The Capitol Steps,” a musical comedy group that performs political song parodies all over the country. They pride themselves in putting the “mock” in “democracy.” The troupe, based in Washington DC, began as a group of House and Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. All together they have 62 years of Congressional staff experience. Elaina, who founded the group in 1981, describes the creative process when it comes to parody and politics, satire and scripting, humor and humans. “The Capitol Steps” political satire is the perfect antidote to the toxic partisan political ads running endlessly on television this election cycle. Their hot topics include the Republican presidential candidates in the primary, Vice President Biden's verbal slips, superPACs, the death of Osama bin Laden, the immigration laws in Arizona, Justice Roberts' ruling on Obamacare, Speaker John Boehner, and any and all scandals and politicians, on both sides of the aisle. Since they began, the Capitol Steps have recorded over 30 albums, including their latest "Take the Money and RUN for President," "Desperate Housemembers," and "Liberal Shop of Horrors." They've been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard 2 times a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their Politics Takes a Holiday radio specials.
