Senator Michael Padilla (D-District 14). Majority Whip, NM Senate
Air Dates: July 1-3, 2017
his week's guest on REPORT FROM SANTA FE is Senator MICHAEL PADILLA (D-District 14, Bernalillo), Majority Whip of the New Mexico Senate, discussing his "Hunger Free Students Bill of Rights" law which has garnered so much national and international attention.
A senator since 2013, Padilla also speaks about holding his upcoming 5th Job Fair – Wednesday, July 19, with 90 employers and at least 4,000 job seekers, and his legislation expanding broadband access and major internet infrastructure expansion in parts of the state that need it most.
As a legislator, Padilla focuses primarily upon economic development and job creation, early childhood education, CYFD child protective services reform, and Public Education reform.
Nothing prepared Padilla for the media storm of interest that arose following the successful passage and signing of SB374, his Hunger-Free Students’ Bill of Rights Act, designed to prohibit “lunch-shaming,” or humiliating students for not being able to pay for their school lunches.
In recent weeks, Padilla was interviewed by The New York Times, National Public Radio, The Today Show on NBC, Fox News and quoted in online publications like Slate and The Huffington Post. In one day alone, Padilla did 82 media interviews on the “lunch shaming” bill. Lawmakers in other states are looking at introducing similar legislation in their states, and there has been extensive international interest.
