Sharing personal stories of great Speakers before him, Rep. Martinez talks about his father, Walter Martinez, and the late Ben Lujan. He describes his optimism for smooth coordination and clear communications between the legislative chambers and the fourth floor. New jobs initiatives for the state and important social justice legislation are among his top priorities during this Session. Martinez describes the new Legislative Jobs Council, in which he brings together “all the partners. We should bring in all the labs, …the universities, have legislative leadership and our partners, which will be commerce and industry but also labor because no one is more interested in a job than a guy that slings a hammer for a living. Senator Peter Wirth and Representative Nate Gentry This week on "Report from Santa Fe" Lorene talks to Representative Nate Gentry (R-Bernalillo), the Minority Whip of the House, and Senator Peter Wirth (D-Santa Fe), the new Chair of the Conservation Committee in the Senate. Both lawmakers are introducing exciting and interesting legislation this session, so tune in for a heads-up on important bills to watch. They discuss bipartisanship and the changes of leadership in both houses, making this show a great introduction to this year's legislative session. Among the hot legislation introduced and discussed by Senator Wirth and Representative Gentry are SB 13 which closes a tax loophole so that out-of-state corporations pay their fair share of taxes, HB 12 which says cash assistance benefits cannot be paid out in casinos, bars, or strip clubs, and SB 15 demanding transparency of corporate campaign donors. Also examined are Gentry's anti-corruption HB 13 and Wirth's GMO food labeling proposal SB 18. Watch Episode
